no, u dont need to have the skill to hold the weapon....
but u do need a profeciency of the weapon in cause to wear it..... lets take a lvl 70 blade as an example: if u read the info about the weapon its says : WeaponSkill: BladeLvl7 meaning that u need lvl 7 at blade prof to wear it.
It works the same way to every weapon,expcet the tao's BS
To check ur current weapon lvl u can go to status, click the 3rd icon from above and then click one handed if its a sword,club blade or any 1 handed weapon, 2 handed are the longhammer,glaive,wand and the "others" section is for shield and boxing lvls.

the best to worrior is wand coz it gives him a great attack and it can help u plvl fast coz of skill snow that u can hit more than 1 monster i nthe same time but if u want to increase ur def u should wear shield and club
